"Le Livre de Kells" is the twelfth novel by Sorj Chalandon, drawing from his own experiences to recount a significant period in his life. At 17, after leaving high school, Lyon, and his family, he found himself in Paris, enduring nearly a year of hardship, living on the streets, facing the cold and hunger. Escaping a racist and anti-Semitic father, he took on the name Kells, referencing a 9th-century Irish gospel, to reinvent himself against this "Minotaur." One day, compassionate people reached out to help him off the streets, offering love, education, and a reconciliation with humanity. He discovered political engagement mixed with solidarity, struggles, hopes, but also with excesses and illusions. The sudden death of an activist, Pierre Overney, led to the dissolution of La Gauche Prolétarienne. Some never recovered, while others sought new paths for their struggles. Chalandon joined "Libération" in September 1973. This novel is a personal adventure and a testament to a militant youth and a turbulent era. Chalandon has altered some names, events, and timelines to transform this truth into fiction.
