Great Escapes Alps. The Hotel Book

The Alps are the largest - and most remarkable - mountain range in Europe. Formed millions of years ago, they became a popular destination at the end of the 18th century, first for adventurers and explorers, then for artists and writers, and finally for all those who came here to enjoy the coolness of the summer or to do winter sports in this magnificent landscape. Following in their footsteps, Angelika Taschen has collected the most beautiful hotels in the Alpine countries of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and Italy.

These include the Kranzbach, built by a British aristocrat near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Gasthof Hirschen in the Bregenzerwald, which has been welcoming art lovers since 1755, and the Seehof near Salzburg, which focuses on contemporary art and culinary arts. The journey takes us to the Waldhaus Sils in Sils Maria, where many creative minds have found inspiration, to the Schatzalp in Davos - Thomas Mann erected a literary monument to it in "The Magic Mountain" - and to picturesque, personally managed bed & breakfasts such as the Brücke49 in Vals or the Maison Bergdorf in Interlaken. Above Chamonix, mountaineers have been staying at the Refuge du Montenvers for more than 140 years, which offers a breathtaking view of the Mer de Glace, the largest glacier in France. In Megève, a luxury ski resort that owes its tourist boom to Baroness Noémie de Rothschild, you can experience the French Alps at the chalet-hotel L'Alpaga, while a touch of Italian dolce vita can be found in dream houses in South Tyrol such as the Ottmangut in Merano, the nostalgic Villa Arnica in Lana or the Pension Briol near Barbiano: built in 1928 in Bauhaus style, it was extended in 2021 by two very modern buildings. This generously illustrated book introduces us to the Alps and their inns with large photos, concise texts and useful details such as the location of the hotel, how to get there, and the room rates. Hikers, skiers, gourmets and those who like to be at ease will find valuable tips and addresses tailored to their needs: for example, former monasteries where peace and solitude still prevail, a refuge chalet in the middle of the Dolomites and a youth hostel in a former sanatorium - a rare example of modern construction in Switzerland, which was declared an architectural monument in 2002.
