Catalogue devoted to the final period of Matisse’s work, from 1941 until his death in 1954. Despite physical limitations following an operation, he produced during these years some of his greatest masterpieces: the Vence Chapel, the large cut-out gouaches, and Jazz.
The catalogue captures this vital fluidity by bringing together, in a supple, flexible “flexibook” object with refined graphic design, superb reproductions of works—mostly full-page—alongside lesser-known photographs of the works in the studio, taken by major figures of the medium: Adant, Capa, Carone, Cartier-Bresson, Sima, etc. This iconographic dialogue, accompanied by texts from specialists, makes it possible to better understand the works of this final decade and to fully grasp the symbiosis between art and life in Matisse’s practice.
