Christian Dior’s childhood as the origin of the codes of his couture house.
It was in Granville, a fashionable seaside resort in Normandy in the 1910s and 1920s, that the celebrated couturier Christian Dior spent his childhood—more specifically at the villa Les Rhumbs, which now houses the Christian Dior Museum.
This book reads as a journey through the couturier’s childhood, exploring the foundational elements that would come to define the spirit of Dior. First, the grey and pink house, which inspired the designer’s colour palette for his dresses; then its gardens, which Christian Dior loved tending alongside his mother and which would become the source of the floral history of the House of Dior; and finally the references to the Belle Époque, reflected in the draping of the couture house’s creations and rooted in his mother’s tastes.
To illustrate this narrative, images of Christian Dior’s creations, as well as those of his successors, are interwoven with photographs from family albums. The Norman and familial inspiration behind the couturier is thus revealed through the reinventions of the successive designers of the House of Dior.
By highlighting the links between the couturier’s childhood and the enduring codes of the House of Dior, this volume stands as a reference work.
