This catalogue presents the work of Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) in light of his artistic legacy, through a constant, concise, and unprecedented dialogue with the works of artists from the 19th century to the present day.
From the 1880s onward, Cézanne was observed and collected by artists. Between 1895 and 1905 came the solo exhibitions organized by Ambroise Vollard, those of the Salon d’Automne, and then the first major international exhibitions. These events brought critical and commercial success to the master of Aix and established him as the father of modernity, both for the European avant-garde movements of the 1910s and for major international collectors.
Having become a global artist, Cézanne was subsequently viewed from the post-war period to contemporary art in a kaleidoscopic way, both by proponents of lyrical abstraction — Zao Wou-Ki, Pierre Soulages, Simon Hantaï, Joan Mitchell, Serge Poliakoff — and by those associated with Hard Edge painting and Op Art, such as Victor Vasarely, Ellsworth Kelly, Bridget Riley, and Brice Marden.
