Jean-Baptiste Greuze : L'Enfance en lumière
Admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1755 and acclaimed for his portrait art and the naturalistic power of his genre scenes, Greuze first experienced success before leaving the Academy following harsh criticism of his reception painting, Septime Sévère (1769). He later presented his works only in his studio and died in 1805, impoverished and isolated. Greuze continuously explored the theme of childhood, and no artist depicted as many portraits of children: his own, those of friends or patrons, as well as many unknown children, showcasing technical virtuosity in the service of emotion and naturalistic truth. Greuze's work engages in a broader reflection on the place of children in society and the crucial importance of their education. In resonance with the concerns of Enlightenment philosophers (Diderot, Rousseau, Condorcet), the painter invites reflection on the child's place within the family, parental responsibility in their development, the importance of education for personality building, the crucial role of the mother and breastfeeding, even addressing the delicate issue of the loss of innocence. Greuze thus questions the transition to adulthood, romantic feelings, the beginnings of sexuality, and the theme of consent - strikingly relevant today. A painter whose work is to be discovered through the unique yet essential theme of childhood.
