The ancient grains used in Altamura have names such as Appulo, Arcangelo, Duilio and Simeto and they all must be grown in Altamura or the adjoining Communes of Gravina in Puglia, Laterza, Matera, Poggiorsini, Spinazzola, Angomarzio, or Minervo Murge. It is the unchanged purity of this wheat for over 2000 years that gives the bread of Altamura much of its uniqueness, just as the wheat gives our distilled premium spirits unique flavor characteristics not found in any other products.
