Year
2018 was a year of ideal climatic conditions. The sun was ever-present. There was 25 per cent more sunshine than average in the spring. The summer heat exceeded the records set in 2003. Water conditions were ideal. There is water in the soil right up until flowering, thanks to the winter and spring rains. The summer is drier and allows a gradual build-up of stress, which is beneficial to quality. Despite generous yields, ripening is rapid.
This is the fifth August harvest (following 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2017) and the earliest, with harvesting commencing around 20 August. The health of the grapes is exceptional and their ripeness reaches record levels, for both Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. 2018 is a vintage with exceptional weather conditions and an extraordinary harvest.
Key points
Vincent Chaperon’s first vintage: His first vintage as Cellar Master at Dom Pérignon. Nearly eight years of ageing:
The vintage underwent active ageing on lees for nearly eight years in the Dom Pérignon cellars.
Harvesting tailored to each grape variety: The Chardonnay was left to ripen fully, whilst the Pinot Noir was harvested with greater restraint in order to preserve its balance.
Tasting notes
NOSE : from the very first whiffs, the 2018 vintage reveals itself with a rich, deep clarity. It evokes the juicy fruits of a summer orchard. Tropical notes of yellow kiwi and mango. Green notes of a summer salad, ivy and balsamic herbs
PALATE : on the palate, this wine unfolds and is characterised by its liveliness and richness. Full-bodied and dense, it envelops and coats the palate. Its generosity is underpinned by a subtle bitterness. The finish leaves a slight hint of apricot.
