In 2025, the Pont-Aven Museum celebrates its 40th anniversary. To mark this occasion, two ambitious exhibitions are being presented: a monographic exhibition by contemporary artist Corinne Vionnet from February to May, and the summer exhibition, in collaboration with the Musée d'Orsay, focusing on the figure of the witch in the 19th century.
In our collective imagination, witches have long symbolized old age, death, vice, and evil. They are associated with the supernatural, nature, and the unknown. However, 1862 marked a turning point with the publication of Jules Michelet's "La Sorcière," where the witch became an emblem of rebellion, knowledge, and harmony with nature, setting the foundations for eco-feminism. Re-enchanted, the witch becomes a symbol of the struggle of the oppressed against arbitrariness. Ambivalent, the witch crystallizes male fantasies as an eroticized icon with eternal youth, contrasting with the ugly old woman of fairy tales and illustrations. For predominantly male artists, the witch represents the other and the unknown, with its mix of attraction and threat. In a patriarchal society where women are considered minors, the witch embodies the strong woman who threatens the established order and becomes a model and symbol for feminists in the following century, embodying resistance against dominant powers.
The exhibition brings together various art forms, highlighting graphic arts, painting, sculpture, decorative arts, photography, cinema, as well as music, dance, and literature.
