Born in the exceptional volcanic terroir at the foot of Mount Pelée in Martinique, DEPAZ XO Cuvée Volutes Agricultural Rum (45%) is a rare and refined creation. Conceived as a tribute to Victor Depaz, the distillery’s founder, this extra-old cuvée draws direct inspiration from his passion for pairing his finest rums with cigars. Its evocative name, Volutes, refers to the spirals formed by tobacco smoke, perfectly echoing the rich and complex aromatic profile of this spirit.
Produced as a limited, numbered edition of just 2,100 bottles, Cuvée Volutes embodies the very essence of AOC Martinique agricultural rum.
The Secret of Three-Stage Ageing — Triple Maturation
What makes DEPAZ XO Cuvée Volutes so distinctive is its innovative ageing process in a tropical environment. Made from pure sugarcane juice, this rum underwent a complex maturation process carried out in three distinct stages:
Initial ageing in ex-Bourbon casks, developing roundness, vanilla notes and dried-fruit aromas.
Maturation in new American oak casks, bringing structure, noble oak character and a range of spices.
Finishing in small Single Malt whisky casks, enhancing the final blend with remarkable personality and subtle additional nuances.
This interplay between wood and time gives the cuvée profound aromatic complexity and a velvety texture.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: An intense, warm amber hue with deep mahogany highlights.
Nose: Powerful, elegant and harmonious. The nose opens with refined, well-integrated oak, complemented by citrus peels—particularly orange—roasted dried fruit and sweet spices.
Palate: The attack is full-bodied and velvety. The palate reveals a remarkable balance between blond tobacco, aromatic black tea, dried fruit and structured oak. The 45% ABV provides the ideal power to carry the aromas without ever overwhelming the palate.
Finish: Persistent and exceptionally long. The finish unfolds with elegant notes of tobacco, dried fruit and noble oak, accompanied by a delicate smoky and malty touch imparted by its Single Malt cask finish.
