Plus d’Infos

A major figure of Impressionism, Pierre-Auguste Renoir deserves to be reconsidered—alongside Manet, Degas, Monet, or Caillebotte—as one of the great painters of modern life in the 19th century. Auguste Renoir’s colorful, joyful paintings and his depictions of riverside dance halls and public balls earned him the reputation of a “painter of happiness.” This catalogue shows just how much love—understood as a fundamental force connecting human beings to one another and to nature—guided Renoir’s inspiration. The artist defined painting as “something loveable, joyful, and pretty,” and he indeed never ceased to develop in his works a happy, modest, and tender vision of love.

Exhibition from 17 March to 19 July 2026 at the Musée d’Orsay, then from 3 October 2026 to 31 January 2027 at the National Gallery, London, and from 20 February to 13 June 2027 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
