Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) produced more than 4,000 works, now held in the world’s leading museums. An early Impressionist, he pursued an uninterrupted sixty-year career that led him to develop a thoroughly personal palette, in which the irresistible pull of color and a sensual, intimate approach immediately affect the viewer: simple figure types—studio models or bourgeois sitters—everyday scenes with joyful atmospheres, and opulent nudes.
Although the considerable variations in quality among works from the same period have harmed the painter’s reputation, his many masterpieces remain in the pantheon of art history.
With a lively pen, the author brings back to life the excitement of the artistic milieu of the time: we see Charles Gounod encouraging the painter; Alfred Sisley and Frédéric Bazille becoming close friends; Daubigny and Corot supporting him. Writers, too, played their part: Zola, Stéphane Mallarmé, and Octave Mirbeau became ardent defenders. From circles of friends to Paris Salons and World’s Fairs, from artists’ studios to trips to Brittany, Italy, Algeria, and Cagnes, the painter forged an identity recognizable above all others. The role of major dealers—and even patrons such as Paul Durand-Ruel, Charles Ephrussi, Paul Bérard, Albert Cahen d’Anvers, Dr. Barnes, Henri Rouart, and others—also occupies an important place in this account.
