Bold and poetic, the work of photographer Lee Miller (1907–1977) takes us on a turbulent journey through the 20th century. Active within avant-garde circles, the American artist built her body of work over more than four decades, at a time when photography was not yet widely accepted as an art form and women were given little recognition in the field.
By turns a Surrealist model and a war correspondent, Lee Miller always asserted her freedom and refused to let others define her practice or her path. Her photographs transcend genres, exploring portraiture, fashion, still life, landscape, and reportage. Sometimes subtly tinged with humor, they reveal a world of singular beauty and troubling ambiguity.
Drawing on new research from her archives, the contributions examine every aspect of her career: from her beginnings in Paris to her experiences in New York and Cairo, from her fashion shoots for Vogue to her war reporting. British author Deborah Levy also offers a personal reflection on Lee Miller and her art.
Illustrated with nearly 250 images, many previously unpublished, this book moves beyond the myth and celebrates a major artist of the 20th century.
