With Amarillo, the fifth volume of Blacksad, Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido take their heroes — Blacksad, the feline private detective — on a road movie reminiscent of the "Beat Generation." This fifth episode of Blacksad, Amarillo, opens in New Orleans: Weekly has to leave the city, leaving John, who prefers to stay and look for work. By chance, he meets a wealthy Texan who offers him a job to drive his car back home — a simple and well-paid task! The detective accepts, but at a gas station, the car is stolen by Chad Lowell and Abe Greenberg — two beatnik writers heading to Amarillo, Texas. Soon, a quarrel between the two rival men turns into a tragedy: Chad, pushed to the limit, shoots Abe, who dies instantly. Forced to flee, Chad finds refuge in a circus. John takes off in pursuit across the American roads of New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, and Illinois. Amarillo is the fifth album of Blacksad, a series portraying a detective cat in an atmosphere that strongly evokes the noir novel of American literature.
